How to Stay Safe with Online Shopping: My 7 Tips

As the population becomes more tech savvy, you’re going to find that you’re going to want to make more and more purchases online. I don’t blame you, I find that the prices are not only great, but where else can you shop in the comfort of your own home?

Whether you’re a pro at online shopping, or you’re new to it, I wanted to give you some hints and tips of steps that I take, when I make a purchase online. By following these pointers you can help protect yourself online and shop confidently!

1) Start with your own computer: Make sure that your computer is secure right now. Do you have an anti-virus program? Do you have spyware killing software? If you have this software installed, make sure it’s up to date and have it regularly scanned.

2) Research the company online: If you have found that you came across a merchant online that you want to purchase from, make sure that you research them first. Check with the BBB, check reviews online, as well as just trust your gut. A Google search can take you a long way.

3) Look for the secure logo: Since you’re going to be giving out your personal information, you’re going to want to make sure that you look for the SSL on the website on the ordering page. Generally, you will be able to look in your browser bar where you will see https://, as well as a “yellow lock.” This will mean that your information will be encrypted.

4) Create a one-time credit card: Most credit card companies out there will allow you to log into your account online, and create a one-time credit card number. Once you use the credit card, you won’t be able to use it again. Major banks such as Citi allow you to do this, and it’s 100% free.

5) Only pay with a credit card: Since your transactions will be safe with your credit cards, make sure that you use a credit card, rather than a debit card. This way, if something does happen, you’re going to be protected. Never send a check, money order, or cash in the mail.

6) Trust your gut: If the deal is too good to be true, it more than likely is. If you’re getting 85% off the product, and the company is a no name place, you’re going to get what’s coming to you. Sure, there are lots of great deals out there, but if you’re questioning it, it’s best to play it safe and walk away.

7) Print out all receipts: Once you make your purchases, I would print out the receipts and save it for the future. Just in case anything happens, you’re going to have proof for the credit card company itself. This is a great way to protect yourself, just in case something happens.

Using your head, as well as following these tips, will keep you safe to enjoy the benefits of online shopping! Don’t forget purchasing items online can not only save you money, but time as well so don’t be put off by the safety scares, just be sensible about how you pay for your basket!
