The UK has been revealed as the world’s third biggest source of viruses, almost doubling its figures from May! Korea continues to lead the way however, holding responsibility for 16% of the world’s internet viruses followed by the US with 11%.
As for Spam sources, the UK again remains high up the listings just pushed into 4th by Brazil. Stats like these are worrying for any business and remind us of the growing presence of cyber crime!
Trend Micro noted in regards to cyber crime, that many perpetrators are opting to exploit lesser known browsers with increasing popularity, Apple’s Safari and Opera being notable examples. Basically what we’re saying is don’t take for granted that any site is safe!
Browsers like Apple Safari and Opera, as well as Google’s chrome etc are likely to be prime targets particularly if, as thought, the dominance of Internet Explorer and Firefox falls apart following the EU browser ballot decision.
As one security advisor suggests,
“The limited mitigation afforded by using a less widespread browser is increasingly sidelined by criminals all too aware that the browser market has changed for good.”
This along with the ongoing problems with security in relation to social networks makes the net seem like quite a daunting arena in regards to online security. Facebook, for example, has experienced additional security breaches in recent days with the discovery of hacking on the site from political activists, a process labeled, ‘political hacktivism’. Given the attack appeared to be run by Turkish hackers, and that they once claimed a world record for defacing 37,000 pages in day, we should not discount the thought they might find an automated way to move!
