World Cup Dreams Threatened

Global interest in the World Cup has brought with it major growth in online security threats. Four key players in particular should be carefully watched;

  1. Spam – Wearing the No.1 shirt is ‘World Cup’ themed spam, which is appearing everywhere online. Much of this is the expected marketing jargon, however there’s an additional increase in more malicious spam with malware intentions or carrying spyware.
  2. SEO Poisioning – Malicious websites are being more highly ranked in World Cup themed searches due to Search engine optimisation threats.
  3. Spear Phishing – This forceful player has specific targets, namely World Cup ticket holders or World Cup related businesses, with messages designed to lure them to malware laden sites.
  4. Social networks – The World Cup makes people talk hence social network sites being the perfect dummy for malware to be communicated through.

Social networking security in question AGAIN!

“Reset your Facebook password”

This is the message being sent to users worldwide. There is no message content, you aren’t asked to do anything but there is an attachment included in the message called facebook_newpass.html and is detected by Sophos as Troj/JSRedir-BO

What happens when you click on?? Well as soon as you open the file, you’ll be redirected to a third party site trying to sell you a product! Fun? NO!!

UK responsible for 6% of world’s net viruses!

The UK has been revealed as the world’s third biggest source of viruses, almost doubling its figures from May! Korea continues to lead the way however, holding responsibility for 16% of the world’s internet viruses followed by the US with 11%.

Spotting Spam!

The analysis of more than 500 million junk messages revealed that the first letter of your email address can dictate the amount of spam you receive. Scientist Dr Richard Clayton found that e-mail addresses starting with an “A”, “M” or “S” got more than 40% spam whilst by contrast those beginning with a “Q” or “Z” got about 20%.
